Each column of information in the file list has a heading associated with it, and there are 2 sets of headings you can use. The only different between them is that one has a column for Kind strings (as they appear in Get Info) and the other has columns for Creator and Type. Use the List menu to toggle between the two.
Use the mouse to perform these actions with the headings.
Sorting the List:
Click a heading to sort the list by that heading.
Command-click a heading to do a secondary sort. (See File List Window for a description of secondary sorts.)
Removing a Column:
Remove any column other than Name by dragging its heading up out of the heading bar.
Changing Column Order:
Reorder the columns by dragging headings left or right.
You can drag a heading any time the cursor looks like this:

Resize a column by dragging the right edge of its heading. You can resize a column when you see this cursor:
